To start the spring season in the best way possible, this 21st of March the Catalunya Voluntària Foundation team celebrated the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination – declared by the General Assembly of United Nations in 1960 – and the European Action Week Against Racism organizing and taking part in an antiracist picnic.
It was a multicultural, multiethnic and multi-gastronomic picnic, where the “diversity was never enough”: 14 people and delicious food from all around the world prepared by people from 6 nationalities.
The Picnic took place in Plaça de las Tres Xemeneies in Poble Sec district in Barcelona, where you can feel the mixture of different cultures every day, due to the presence of people, children, skaters and graffiti artists and, last Wednesday, also with the good smell of the food which went beyond the borders of diversity and filled up our stomachs with hummus, tortillas, frittata, tzatziki, etc…
In this way, we tasted the idea of our fellow colleague, Zuhair, who is promoting a Syrian Gastronomic Journey in Barcelona, to present the delicious Syrian food and wanting Barcelona’s residents to get to know the food, culture and life experiences of other young people and families who have escaped from war and suffered from its disasters. This way, we also aim to prevent the racism which still exists in our society.
Besides, we had great conversations about our experiences, ideas and future projects with two Syrian chefs and some of the leaders of the Syrian Community in Barcelona, and improved the connections among the members of the FCV, making new friends.
