Hola! I’m Ola (in Poland, Ola is a shorter version of the name Aleksandra – I have no idea why). What’s it like when you hear people saying your name a hundred times a day, even though they’re not talking to you? At first, it’s strange, but you get used to it. ☺
Since the beginning of October, I’ve been participating in the European Solidarity Corps program in Barcelona. As a volunteer, I help at the Fundació Catalunya Voluntària. Despite my relatively short time here, I’ve already had the chance to take part in three events organized by the foundation.
“Volunteering for Peace” was about promoting volunteering in Mediterranean countries and helping representatives of other organizations with a similar profile to connect. This will allow them to collaborate more effectively in the future and organize more interesting initiatives and projects together.
“Ecorasmus 360 Degree” focused on environmental issues and ecology. I’ve now realized how crucial it is to consider the environmental impact in every project, regardless of its main focus. Let’s take care of our planet!
“Our Story – Storytelling for LGBTQA+ Community Wellbeing” opened my eyes to the struggles and challenges LGBTQ+ people face daily. Previously, I didn’t fully understand how important it is to have a tolerant environment and a sense of belonging and community with others. This experience taught me the significance of supporting diversity and creating spaces where everyone feels accepted and safe.
Each of these events was unique, addressing socially significant topics, and helped me broaden my horizons. It was an incredible adventure and an opportunity to meet people from all over the world and learn fascinating facts about their cultures and traditions. I also improved my English and made my first international friendships!
At the same time, I got a glimpse into the practical work of a foundation. I hadn’t heard much about this sector before, so I was especially curious about what working for a non-profit organization looks like. The foundation focuses, among other things, on non-formal education – a type of education that takes place outside traditional school and academic systems. It’s more interactive and flexible, which I found very appealing. I loved seeing how effectively it can be tailored to participants’ needs through engaging workshops, simulation games, group projects, or storytelling. Now I understand why non-formal education is so popular in youth organizations, international programs like Erasmus+, and various social initiatives.
Why did I choose Barcelona out of so many volunteering options? The answer is simple – because it’s Barcelona. ☺ Okay, now seriously. When I think about why Poles love Barcelona, weather definitely tops the list! 20 degrees and clear skies in November… It’s hard not to smile.
Walking through the streets of Barcelona, I can’t help but smile as if I’ve just heard the best joke ever. It’s hard to be in a bad mood when you feel like you’re on vacation, even when you’re heading to work. This beautiful city is full of historic landmarks, street performers, breathtaking views, and tourists wandering the streets. Maybe that’s why every day here feels a little like a holiday. I take long walks every day to discover new corners of the city, burn some calories, and make room for delicious Catalan treats: tapas, paella, empanadas, seafood, and, of course, sangria. ☺ There’s something for everyone here – from art exhibitions, concerts, and international cuisine restaurants to cafes, museums, and plenty of techno parties.
In Barcelona, I live in Barceloneta. I still can’t believe that the sea is just a 3-minute walk from my place. I share my apartment with three flatmates: one from Italy, one from Mexico, and one from Colombia. We communicate in English since I’m just starting to learn Spanish and Catalan. I’m thrilled that, despite our cultural differences, we quickly found common ground.
I’m so happy that I still have four more months in Barcelona. I have no idea where the first two months went. Each day is a new lesson, a new adventure, and unforgettable memories. With every step, I get to know this city even better, and with every experience, I grow as a person. I’m constantly reminded that I made the best possible decision. This city inspires, surprises, and teaches me to be open to the world and its people. From this experience, I’m gaining not only new skills but also memories and friendships that I hope will last a lifetime. I’m sure this adventure is just the beginning of something greater, and more travels, challenges, and exciting projects are waiting for me just around the corner.
