My name is Walaa, I come from Egypt, and I have been volunteering at the Fundació Catalunya Voluntària for the past weeks. I still remember the moment I arrived: the warm afternoon breeze, the vibrant streets, and that mix of fear and excitement that accompanies every new beginning.
Barcelona surprised me from the first day. Its lively neighborhoods, the mix of cultures, the colors of the sea and the hills… everything makes you feel that the city embraces you with its own rhythm. I thought adapting would be difficult, but instead I found myself surrounded by people who supported me, helped me understand the atmosphere, and made me feel at home.
At the Fundació Catalunya Voluntària, I discovered a completely new world. The youth mobility projects, the meetings with my mentor, and the conversations with the team allowed me to understand how international programs can open doors for young people who want to grow, learn, and contribute to their communities. I still remember my first day at the office: I was anxious, but everyone was kind, patient, and welcoming.
One of the most meaningful moments so far was participating in a seminar in Vilanova i la Geltrú. It was my first activity outside Barcelona, and also the first time I saw how organizations collaborate to create spaces of learning and exchange. The conversations, the sessions, and the peaceful atmosphere of this coastal city made me feel that I was truly part of something bigger.
What is shaping my experience the most is the people. The FCV team has been incredibly supportive, open, and understanding. They have created a space where I feel valued, where ideas matter, and where every day brings something new to learn.
On a personal level, Barcelona is teaching me patience, curiosity, and the importance of small moments: a chat during the coffee break, a walk near the sea, or watching a street art show with people smiling and greeting me with a warm “Hola”.
I know I still have many experiences ahead of me, but I can already say I am grateful for the city, for the opportunities, and for the people who are becoming part of my story.
Walaa’s project, titled ‘Volunteering for Peace’ is taking place thanks to the support of the ‘European Solidarity Corps’ program of the European Commission and is the result of the partnership of the FCV and the Egyptian NGO Mediterranean Youth Foundation for Development.
