Our Story podcasts – about what it means to be a queer refugee in Europe today

by FCV | Nov 17, 2025 | International Trainings, News and experiences! | 0 comments

Some stories are never told at family dinners. You won’t find them in a CV. They’re kept deep inside because it feels like no one will understand.
But what if these are exactly the stories the world needs most?

Our Story is a podcast where the voice is given to those usually unheard. It is a space created within the international cooperation in KA2 project of the same name, coordinated by FCV from 2024 and continuously summing up the actions for international LGBTQ community wellbeing. Our partner organisation from Greece, Emantes, who coordinates the podcast series, launched 3 episodes where Yuli, Nastores and Rosa share their stories.

Imagine this: you flee a country where you are persecuted for who you are. You arrive in Greece with no money, no network, no language. You’re a queer person seeking asylum. And then the real fight for survival begins – not only physical, but emotional, bureaucratic, social.

That’s what our podcasts are about. Food insecurity among LGBTQ+ refugees – when food vouchers become a matter of life or death. Housing crises where transgender people are denied shelter because they are considered “inconvenient” for others. Sex work as the only way to survive. The struggle to change a deadname in official documents when the system works against you even after gaining refugee status.

Every episode features real people and their real experiences.
A trans woman from Cuba who received refugee status yet still faces discrimination when travelling. She recalls how cheap street food became her anchor in the first days in a new country, when everything else felt impossible.
A gay man from Cameroon navigating the asylum process, still believing that one day the anti-LGBT laws in his country will change.

These conversations are honest and sometimes harsh. They speak about systemic injustice, about living at the intersection of several forms of discrimination. But they are also about solidarity, the role of support organisations, and the power of community to change things.

Participants and experts talk about what is happening right now, in 2025, across a united Europe. Each episode is a piece of documentary testimony – something everyone should hear.

Our Story is an initiative of activists from Greece, Spain, Italy, Czech Republic and Slovakia who came together and realised: our stories need space. Visible, accessible, authentic space.

Right now the podcasts live on the Emantes YouTube channel, but soon there will be a dedicated Our Story digital platform – a European space where queer stories will find a home in many formats: text, audio, video, zines, poetry. Anything that helps us tell them.

Because when someone in Košice reads about the journey of a refugee in Greece, and a young woman in Italy finds strength in the voice of an activist from Barcelona – we’ll know it works. Stories build bridges where politics builds walls. Go to the channel. Listen. Share.
Let these voices be heard by as many people as possible.
Because sometimes one story reminds someone they’re not alone. And sometimes – it changes everything.
