My internship at FCV

Do you know when you think you have all your future perfectly figured out, but then something happens that makes you reconsider everything you?

Well, the exact same thing happened to me about three months ago, when I was told I had won a scholarship of the Erasmus+ program for doing an internship abroad and I found myself in mid-April, standing at the airport of Venice with three enormous suitcases, ready to leave for a three-month internship in Barcelona.

Since I didn’t really know what was going to wait for me here, I arrived in Barcelona a bit dazed and scared. Luckily enough, all my expectations were widely exceeded: everyone here at FCV welcomed me in the best possible way, making me feel accepted and involving me in their everyday life since the first day.

Silvia-internship (1)At work I’m involved mainly in translation and communication-related task. I help Lorena, my supervisor, with translations from Spanish and Catalan to English: the webpage of the Fundació, the Annual Report of the last year and other reports, news and documents. I also helped making the office look even prettier putting in order the library we have in the office!

At the same time, working at FCV I learnt a lot of new things. On the practical side I learned, for example, how to manage a webpage and how to handle the communications with the partner organizations from other countries. Not to mention the language: I was finally able to put into practice what I had been studying at university, I improved my Spanish and I even understand a little bit of Catalan, now!

Also, thanks to FCV I started discovering the “world” of the NGOs – which I didn’t know at all, before coming here: the voluntary work they promote and carry out, the international projects, courses and exchanges in which they’re involved and, mostly, the opportunities available for young people all around Europe. I was even lucky enough to take part in an on-site research visit conducted at FCV and to briefly meet the people participating in an international training course that “we” organized.

And I was lucky enough to learn all thins things in the most amazing setting ever, Barcelona. I can’t even begin to explain how much I love this city! The park of Montjüic and the view from the top of its castle, the beach with the palm trees, the Paseig the Gràcia, the colours inside the Boqueria market – and in the whole city, for that matter -, the Joan Miró museum, the lights inside the Sagrada Familia… everything! And I will never forget the “Diada de Sant Jordi”, when Lluc brought us girls at FCV a red rose and the city was full of market stalls selling flowers and second-hand books; or my birthday, when we all went to eat “pinchos” to celebrate; making a tiramisù with Gorai in my flat; or watching the sun rising in the Barceloneta beach, the night of Sant Joan 🙂

Silvia-internship (4)So, right now I’m thinking about the next time I’ll be in the airport of Venice: this time I’ll be at the “arrivals” gate and my three ginormous luggage will be even heavier with all the souvenirs I’ll be bringing home. And I’m pretty sure I will be already missing the coffee breaks at midday, the lunches with my colleagues and the Wednesdays’ meetings. I also think it will be strange not going back to my roommates, in a flat that, after three months, started feeling like home.

But nevertheless, I’m sure I’ll have a smile on my face, because I’ll know that my heart has become a little bit bigger and these three months have been one of the best of my life. I would never have imagined that this experience could change me and affect me so much: in 13 weeks I discovered what freedom, independence, responsibility and happiness mean… and all thanks to this experience, this city and the people I’ve met at FCV.

Gràcies i fins aviat,
